If you want to give your home a facelift, something a bit special, but without breaking the bank, fabric could be the way forward. Not just any old fabric though.
I recently completed a job where I used a large quantity of silk which has resulted in a new found fascination with this wonderful material.
Another home that might benefit from this exotic treatment is this five bedroom detached house on 1.25 acres in Thurles.
Accessed from the entrance hall is the kitchen and dining area which opens directly onto the garden. There is also a separate utility room.
The living room can either be reached from the entrance hall or from the kitchen and the double height space has exposed timber beams and a south facing aspect. It would make an ideal room for entertaining. There is also a separate sitting room - perfect for escaping to.
The master bedroom has a large balcony, separate en-suite with bath and shower as well as a walk in wardrobe. Two of the other four bedrooms share the second en-suite and all the bedrooms enjoy uninterupted views of the surrounding countryside. There is also a large family bathroom with bath and shower and a large linen room.

Outside there is a detached garage with first floor office space which could be easily converted to provide additional living accommodation.
I would choose dupions silk for curtains, taffetas and heavy Thai silks for headboards and cushions, silk velvet for dining chair covers and perhaps screen printed silk for roman blinds. The result, I promise, will be amazingly luxurious.
There is a myth that silk is an extravagant choice for interiors, but this is not the case. Thai silk for example is relatively inexpensive yet looks so luxurious and is available in over 90 shades.
Roisin Cross Silks supplies beautiful silks for soft furnishing's ranging from embroidered dupions, screen prints, velvets, to taffeta's and Thai silks. Prices for Thai silks start at €32.50 per metre. www.silks.ie
Another favourite of mine is silk wallpaper. Stereos range of hand spun, hand woven wild silk wall coverings are just devine. Stereo wall coverings are available to purchase in Duff Tisdall and a range of the wall coverings are on view in their Goatstown store. www.dufftisdall.ie
RugArt in Clonskeagh have a range of rugs which are a mix of wool and silk. Part of the Jan Kath collection they can be supplied in any size and colour combination. With most of the designs a mix of 50% silk and 50 % wool can be used. www.rugart.ie
And the eco-aware amongst you might like the fact silk is a renewable resource, unlike fossil fuel derived textiles, like nylon or acrylic. Being a natural fibre, spun by the humble silk worm, it is readily biodegradable after its useful life.
