| | Silk is the fabric that makes its own statement. Say “silk” to someone and what do they visualise? No other fabric generates quite the same reaction. For centuries silk has had a reputation as a luxurious and sensuous fabric, one associated with wealth and success. Silk is one of the oldest textile fibers known to man. The Chinese has used it since the 27th century BC, and during the Roman Empire silk was sold for its weight in gold. Today, silk is yet another word for elegance, and silk garments are prized for their versatility, wear ability and comfort. It is the strongest natural fibre, is breathable, naturally hypoallergenic, absorbs moisture and reduces humidity. It is surprisingly cool in the summer, and remarkably warm in the winter. Silk retains its shape, drapes and forms well, and has an unmistaken sheen and feel. |

New era Judith O’Sullivan took over the reigns of Roisín Cross Silks in 2007, and as she admits, the boots she had to fill were enormous, however, the reputation of excellence has continued throughout the transfer period, and as Judith approaches her second year of business, loyal customers continue to recall fond memories of Roisín’s Clonskeagh premises all those years ago.
Judith is hugely passionate about her business and thrives on conversing with customers. Judith’s exuberance sparkles as she speaks about her trade, and it’s easy to see how her business is so successful “ I absolutely adore what I do. I love working with people, and dealing with many of the challenges in business today. I thoroughly enjoy hearing customer’s stories and helping them whatever way I can.” Judith travels to the Far East annually in November to source her collection for the year ahead, and interacts regularly with the design colleges dress designers and those involved in the business of forecasting colours and fabrics for the seasons to follow.
Bridal
A commissioned bridal dress is totally unique and distinctive, and having one specifically designed adds to the magical ambience of this special time. Treble silk satin crepe won Bridal Design of the Year 07/08 and is most popular with brides to be. “ I work very closely with design colleges and dress designers to keep abreast of what they will need for the following year. I match the needs of customers to particular dress designers and refer them on. In turn they refer clients to me,” says Judith.
Interiors
A large and new range of coloured and embroidered silks are available that will excite the imagination, and have a wide range of uses. These rousing new ranges will redefine your thinking and your overall appreciation and love of silk.
Fantastic Sales
Roisín Cross Silks holds an amazing sale in October every year, and when the new collection arrives in January, customers are offered an exclusive cut price deal for a limited time. “ Our sale always creates a phenomenal response. We contact all current customers in January and offer them new silks at old prices, which gives them an advantage over everybody else,” says Judith.
Expensive myth
The association of silks with extravagance, can also inspire an association with expense, a concept Judith has struggled to crack. “ Silk has actually maintained its value. People shouldn’t feel intimidated or that it is out of their league. Once they visit us here, people’s opinion changes and they can see that our silks are very reasonable.”
The benefit of Roisin Cross silks is that you can visit the showroom and experience what you will be buying. “ Silk on sight is a huge attraction. A lot of the time people have to choose from catalogues and they may only get a sample of what they need. They have to commit to particular colour and haven’t really got the feel of it. You know what you are buying when you’re here,” Judith commented.
Traditionally, Roisín Cross Silks has operated by appointment only. Recently, Judith has introduced Thursdays and Fridays as days open to the public with no appointment necessary, and implements business in both retail and trade. Judith welcomes all to visit her showroom and experience the silks for themselves.
Silk creates a buzz and ignites a subliminal storm of sumptuous notions, and with Roisín Cross Silks on our doorstep it is easy to see why this extraordinary fabric continues to excite its adoring followers. |
